North East Ambulance Service
Umbraco based website enables ambulance service to work more closely with the communities it serves
North East Ambulance Service wanted a new site delivered on a new platform that would not only provide a valuable point of contact and information resource for users of the service, but also help to promote the service and demonstrate their individuality with particular regard to their new-found status as a Foundation Trust. Crucially the new site had to be easy to keep up-to-date, look sharp and professional, and help them stand out from the crowd of poorly presented and samey NHS sites that exist on the Web.
How we did it
Auros conducted an in-depth User Experience workshop with NEAS to better understand both the public service and business aspects of the organisation, how these impacted the site, who would be using it and what for. Following this we were able to agree on rough wireframes on which the site would be based.
To help NEAS stand out, Auros undertook a full graphic design process, bringing bold new elements into the brand whilst retaining enough classic 'emergency service' design cues to provide continuity. Additionally we chose a free web font to support the unique design and improve readability, and also advised on suitable photography styles.
The site was built using the Umbraco open-source content-management platform, providing fast and powerful content editing facilities, and making it easy for NEAS to keep their site up-to-date.
North East Ambulance Service covers an area of 3,200 square miles serving a population of 2.66 million people. They employ more than 2,000 staff and receive, prioritise and respond to over 360,000 emergency and urgent incidents per annum. They have a predicted annual turnover of £106million for 2010/11.
